I was reading this post the other day by Deb Ng and I don’t know how I feel about it. Essentially, Deb is saying that a whole slew of freelancers now maintain a blog about writing (no argument there) and truthfully how much of this info is actually fresh and new and how much is just rehashed tips? Also, what do you expect from your blog (business, passive income, etc.)?

I’ll answer and then feel free to chime in with your opinions…

1. The purpose of this blog is to track the progression of my career and to share things that I’ve learned as a newbie. While it is highly likely that you as my readers can find a lot of the info that I post here elsewhere, the reason I am talking about it is because either it’s worked or it hasn’t (in my experience). A lot of times tips and advice is nice, but they don’t work for everyone or provide what an individual person needs.

2. I make NO MONEY or any kind of income off this blog. I have no ads and no sponsors. Why? I’ve just never considered it and that really isn’t my driving force here. As far as income generation, if readers happen to visit my Suite101 site (**shameless plug**), find an article of use to them and then click on an adjoining ad, I’ll earn some pennies that way and it is helping both of us. But I in no way encourage that or expect that. This is just a way to share with other freelancers and network. Period. If someone happens across this blog and decides they would like to hire me for a project, there is sufficient contact info in the “about me” section as well as a list of my published articles that they can read and get a feel for my work. Bottom line, I blog to share ideas, network and warm up my writing chops.

Your turn.
