I posted yesterday about how I signed up for a 6 session online copy editing course via mediabistro.com. But what is a copy editing and why do I want to take an intro class about it?

Simply put, copy editing is proofreading intensified. A copy editor checks a document for grammar, punctuation and spelling errors, stylistic conformity (ex. AP style), ensuring the flow of the text, consistency in formatting and making the copy as clear and concise as possible.

I am hoping that this introductory level course gives me a chance to really sharpen my basic proofreading skills which I often find myself questioning as of late. I also think I will benefit from learning how to work from one style guide (I have trouble with consistent rules across the board). Lastly, I want to know what to expect from and how to pass a copy editing test.

For me, these skills will only make me a better writer and give me more credentials to use when seeking out freelance jobs.
