I mentioned that I was considering taking a class to brush up on my editing skills. Well, I took the plunge. I applied for this course being offered online through mediabistro.com It’s $425, but with my discount I’ll only have to pay $400 (I keep reminding myself that it can be used as a tax write off which gives me some clarity on the situation). I don’t know if I’ll be accepted, since I don’t know how selective/strict they are. I am hoping if I am accepted that I can use this opportunity to brush up on my skills, learn all the professional proofreading marks (and actually use them instead of making up my own!), become familiar with the AP Style Guide, and learn how to take and pass a copy editing test. Considering how much I like doing proofreading/editing jobs, I think this will help me be more proficient in my field.
Cross your fingers that I get accepted!
UPDATE: I’ve been accepted. Now I just have to cough up the cash.

I am considering taking the copyediting course through Mediabistro; I was wondering what your thoughts were of the course.

Hi Craig,
I thought it was a good intro class, covered all the basics and the instructor gave us plenty of exercises to do to reinforce what we were learning. I think it depends on your level of familiarity with the subject. Most of what was taught in the class could be learned from reading a book on copy editing. HOWEVER, the part of the course that made it worthwhile was the chats that we had online with the instructor once a week. It gave us a chance to interact with everyone and ask questions, get clarification, etc.
Basically, if you are just starting out, it is a good place to start if you have the money. If not, the info that is taught in the class is readily available online and in book form.
Good luck with your decision!
